Australia beat India in the first one-day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday. Set 375 to win, India could manage only 308-8 in response as the target proved too big a hill to climb even on a Sydney pitch that offered little to the bowlers.
India got off to an excellent start but lost opener Mayank Agarwal (22) in the 6th over. Virat Kohli (21), Shreyas Iyer (2) and KL Rahul (12) all departed in quick succession and the visitors were reeling at 101-4.

A 128-run stand for the fifth wicket between Hardik Pandya (90) and Shikhar Dhawan (74) steadied the ship and gave India some hope. However, Zampa would remove Dhawan and Pandya and put Australia back in the driving seat again.

Ravindra Jadeja (25), Navdeep Saini (29) and Mohammed Shami (13) played valuable cameos but overhauling the target was too tall an order without the presence of one of their key batsmen.

Earlier, skipper Finch and Smith blazed centuries as Australia set India a daunting target. The Indians, coming out of coronavirus quarantine, looked rusty in their first taste of international cricket since February, as the Australians went on a run rampage to reach 374-6 after winning the toss.
