Serum Institute of India (SII) has signed a contract with the Centre for supplying 11 million doses of Covishield vaccine. “We are expecting a bigger order next week,” Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of the Poonawalla group that includes SII.

Covishield has been co-developed by the University of Oxford and British-Swedish company AstraZeneca in collaboration with SII. On January 3 India’s drug regulator had approved emergency use authorization of the vaccine. However the contract order was received by SII officials today.

The vaccine will be available at the price of Rs 200 per dose, Dr Poonawalla said. While the government plans to secure 600 million doses for the country’s vaccination drive set to begin on January 16, the Chairman of the Poonawalla group has appealed for a simultaneous roll out for the private sector as well –– mainly the vulnerable group of elderly people.
