2019 General Election Opts Paper Ballot

NewDelhi: Seventeen opposition parties plan to ask the Election Commission (EC) to use ballot papers to conduct the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“This is a matter on which all opposition parties agreed. We are planning to meet next week. We plan to go to Election Commission,” Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien told reporters in Delhi.
Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, when she visited Parliament on Wednesday, urged Opposition leaders to send a joint delegation to the Election Commission over reports of electronic voting machines (EVM) being tampered with.
“All opposition parties should go to EC on this matter. There should be a joint delegation of opposition parties to EC,” Banerjee was heard telling Opposition leaders, including those from the Congress.
The Trinamool, which governs West Bengal, said the demand is a “common programme” that will unite all opposition parties. Banerjee also urged the Shiv Sena, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party at the centre and Maharashtra, to be a part of the Opposition delegation.
Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had demanded that the 2019 Lok Sabha election be conducted using ballot papers instead of EVMs.
