Following European countries shut down travel to the United Kingdom due to fears about a new strain of the coronavirus, India suspended all flights from UK till December 31. It is also mandatory for travellers arriving from UK in transit flights to undergo RT-PCR test. The Ministry of Civil Aviation informed, all transit flights should be subject to mandatory COVID-19 testing.

This comes as Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday reassured the people of the country, the Central government is alert about the new coronavirus strain emerging from the United Kingdom, adding that there is no need to panic.

On December 19, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had announced that the newly-identified strain of the virus may be up to 70 per cent more transmissible. According to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, the new variant was "out of control".

Earlier, the Health Ministry called an emergency meeting of its top advisors to discuss the emergence of the mutated strain of coronavirus in the United Kingdom, which has led to massive surge in cases and prompted several countries to stop incoming flights from the country.
