Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday appealed to everyone for protection of the nesting habitats of Olive Ridley sea turtles. In a tweet, He shares his happiness over more than 1.48 crore baby turtles of the endangered Olive Ridley species have emerged out of eggshells at Gahirmatha beach this year.

He again urge everyone to work towards protecting nesting habitats of the endangered species. Notably, the hatchlings of the turtles came out from the eggshells from  May 2 at Nasi-2 near the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) establishment at Wheeler’s Island under the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Kendrapada district.

After emerging from the nests, the baby turtles loiter on the beach for an hour or so before starting their journey towards the surface and then scurry to the sea.  It is one of the nature’s rare phenomena where the babies grow without their mothers. The species’ mortality rate is so high that one egg out of every 1,000 ultimately hatches and the hatchlings survive to become an adult Olive Ridley.
